exclamation K9 Advantix Topical Flea Treatment (Guest)

I am writing in regard to K9 Advantix topical treatment for fleas, mosquitos, and ticks. We used it on the advice of our vet as West Nile Virus, which is carried by mosquitos, is a big problem in our community. However, this is a product I would encourage everyone to avoid. We used it on our 5 year old pomeranian and he had a near fatal reaction. He had neurologic side effects, dilation to his heart, and fluid in his lungs all as a result of the medication. The company of course has taken no responsibility for this reaction and informed my vet that "those things don't happen in dogs." Please warn your friends with dogs to avoid K9 Advantix, it just isn't worth the risk.

My uncle also had a little run in with Advantix. Less than a week after his dog being treated, his shnauzer mix started loosing all of her hair. She had to be treated with skin problems for several months and I have to admit she didn't look very pretty either.

I have also had a bad experience with Advantix. The day after application, my dog became lethargic, not eating well, and was very disoriented. In addition there was a slight loss of motor skills, as well as itching and restlessness. I would avoid this medication at all costs. We have since adopted a more natural regimen of a neem based spray, in conjunction with a neem based shampoo, which is effective. Holistic or natural products require a bit more work, but it is certainly better than exposing your dog to such high levels of toxicity, as this drug does. Please - if you love your dog, do not use this medication.

Did your dog get well again? We just put Advantix on our border collie and now she's doing weird things w/her tail. Our vet is stumped but my husband & I were immediately thinking neurological. Please answer this and put us out of our misery! Thank you.

My little dog is acting oddly after a dose of Advantix. She is, too, doing weird things with her tail.......also restless, itchy and I see her skin is burned from where I applied the med btwn her little shoulder blades. I feel awful. I am sick that I didnt research this med first and that I just trusted the vet tech that recommended it. I feel like a horrible mom to my dog right now. Is your dog alright and did you figure out what was going on with her tail? I hope your pup is doing better. Please let me know if all is well. Im planning on a vet visit monday.thanks

Hi, I just read your post about K-9 Advantix. Thanks for the input on this med. My vet also recomended this med but before I purchased it I wanted to research it a little. I've read a lot about neem and other natural remedies on the web but have no experience with it. Does it really work? Any advice you could give me concerning your experience with neem or any other natural approaches to treating and preventing fleas and ticks would be greatly appreciated. Do you know of any websites I could visit. Sincerely, Marion

I have used advantix for over a year now on a mixed breed with no noticeable problems. Of note is are the directions that the medicine be applied in several location along the back and not in just one location between the shoulder blades. The company has some clinical trial info on their website, and while very small number of dogs were used considering the number of dog breeds the data looks like it would be safe for most dogs. The toxicity study exposed the dogs to significantly higher levels than the recommended dosages.
Cheers

Thanks for all the posts here. I have been using K9 Advantix for two months on my 90lb bull mastiff and he has become lethargic, torn much of the hair from his tail and has extreme itching. I could not find any contraindications online before I purchased it but I don't think I searched very diligently. I wanted it to work as advertised. I am going back to the old treatment.

I have a Great Dane that's almost 2. We thought she used to asct strangely when she got her flea meds ( advantage, etc.) BUt we recently switched to Advantix. I put her first dose of the year on at 5:00pm. By midnight we were in the emergency room . She had been pacing, pacing all over the house ( usually goes to sleep before us every night like a lamb). She was drooling, listless. lethargic. Her stomach was gurgling really loudly. We were afriad of bloat. Two hundred dollars latrer the Emergency clinic confirmed that it was not bloat, but her dinner wich she had eaten an hour after medication was still sitting in her stomach as X-ray showed. Her heart rate was racing and he said we needed to have her checked for tachardia. She had been to her vet 2 month before and was fine. Today she has not eaten and has slept most of the day. Advantix is terrible and toxic.

I would just like to add my 2 cents in as well. I'm currently looking for another flea & tick med for my dog thinking of frontline. I used K9 Adavntix for almost a year on the east coast, but have recently moved to the west coast since I've been here, my dog has had Horrible neurological (I think) reactions to K9 Advantix. I purchased a years worth of advantix - but refuse to use it now because her reaction to it the past two months have been very scary. She immediately becomes very panicky, anxious and runs around trying to find exits / hiding under whatever she can. She then becomes so lethargic and out of it, that nothing can really snap her back to reality for about a day. After that she is fine, but it is such a scary reaction, that I won't chance it again. Please everyone - be careful what you are giving to your dog by way of medications. Especially advantix!

My breeder said to use only Revolution Puppy on my toy breed dog (she's under 5 pounds). She said Advantix, Advantage or Frontline can KILL toy dogs as they are too strong for such fragile/small dogs.

I have used Advantix on my ten year old- 45 lb dog for 2 years. I put it between her shoulder blades and within 24 hours, it is not noticable and we can get back to cuddling. I have not noticed any side effects that are listed here. I do know that my favorite local store doesn't carry it (didn't feel like going to PetSmart) and so I got a three month supply of Frontline and I thought it was absolutely worthless. My girl was itching and biting for bugs like crazy!

I can't deny that what I read here is serious and plain awful, but so too is lyme disease for a forest dog. I am going to continue using it but thanks for the heads up, I will keep my eyes open for side effects.

right now my 4 yr old Boston Terrier is in a pet emergency room with my husband. About 5 hours after applying, he began throwing up, panting, eyes dilated. He had a seizure on Sunday from one of those flea collars. Now our other Boston Terrier has not had any reactions from these same products. I will be researching natural products from now on. I am in shock that Bayer, the manufacturer of Advantix does not disclose these side effects. Never again!!

i have 2 dogs and just moved to the east coast with them last summer. I tried frontline on them last summer it did ok, but we still had ticks. So i tried advantix on both of them this year. My 3 year old husky mix did great no ticks, no side effects. My 5 year old collie still got ticks, and started with urinary incontince. I dont know if it has anything to do with advantix, or just the breed but evey test has been run radiographs, bloodwork, u/a, urine cultures, and ultrasound nothing. the urinary incontince is now resolving, but its time for another application. I just wanted to know if anyone expirence urinay incontince incojuction with their pet. I am a certified veterinay tech. and i have been working in this field for 7 years now, and i havent really heard too much on advantix. ( we lived in colorado and they dont have fleas or ticks like they do here!!)

I asked my vet about this bc it concerned me as I have switched between Frontline and Advantix. I was told that Frontline can become useless if given too long and you have to switch between the two. My vet did say something about Advantix is permethrane based which is like the old days flea control and if a dog has a permethrane intolerance, it can have these symptoms. Permethranes are the strong smelling natural ingredient in plants like marigolds and that is why people plant them in gardens, bc they repel bugs. People used to put tons of permethranes on their dogs before these other things came out and us old folks also remember when dips were the only thing you could use to control bugs. I dont know if there is anyway to find out if your dog is permethrane sensitive before actually applying or not. I guess like any kind of substance you apply to your dog, maybe use a little of it and watch for symptoms and if none, apply a little more until you get their full dose on them.

I have a pug that is almost two years old. My husband and I tried K9 Advantix last night on our dog for the first time. This morning the poor thing could barely move his back end, he had verry little use of hes back legs....We quickly called Bayer to ask them if this could be a side effect from the treatment, of couse they said no....My husband and I put Bailey in the tub and washed the stuff off with Dawn dish soap.......he seems better now, but not without some lingering effects. All I know now is that we will never use K9 Advantix again and put a member of our family threw that.
