Posted: 7:34:14 pm on 5/5/2007 Modified: Never

WE TOOK IN A CHOW MIX THAT WANDERED UP OUR DRIVEWAY SEVERAL YEARS AGO, HE HAS THE TYPICAL PROTECTIVE CHOW DISPOSITION. HIS COAT IS MATTED AND TANGLED BUT HE IS NIPPY IF I TRY TO GROOM HIM IN ANY WAY, IT IS REAL BAD NOW BECAUSE HE HAS FECES IN HIS REAR. I AM AT MY WITS END AND SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING EUTHANASIA. ANY SUGGESTIONS??????

You can get some Acepromazine from your vet and put it in some canned food. Make sure you get with your vet for proper dosage as he needs to be sedated enough and long enough for you to cut his coat. The best thing to do is to buy several pairs of cheap scissors and just scissor cut his coat to about 1 inch. Hair is very dulling to scissors so this is why you need to have more than one pair and be prepared. If you are afraid you might cut his skin, use your fingers to pinch off a clump of hair and cut right above your fingers. If properly dosed, he should be sedated enough and long enough for you to at least trim him up. Good luck!
