Lost and Found
Use the links below to register or search for a lost dog.
The
first thing you should do if your dog is lost is to visit all local
animal services as soon as possible. Most animal service departments will
only
keep a dog for a few days before they euthanize. You may also want to take
a printout that
includes a photo and description of your dog and follow up with them
frequently. The information you provide to one person may not always be
shared with others employees. Keep checking in with them, and don't assume
that they will call you if a pet matching your dog's description shows up at the
shelter. You must pay a personal visit and look for your dog.
Post flyers around your neighborhood. This is one of the most effective ways to locate your missing dog. Please remember to remove them after your dog is found.
Check the local lost and found section of your local newspaper, and post an ad.
Be
proactive.
Check your dogs collar and make sure that it's not so loose that it will slip off. Take a look at your ID tag and make sure that it is legible. The text on many ID tags often wears away.
Get
you dog chipped. A small silicon chip can be embedded in your dogs skin by
your vet. These 'chips' are not computer chips and won't give away any
personal information. The chip can be read by a scanner at the shelter to
reveal a serial number. That number can then be traced back to you on a
central databank. It might save your dogs life.
Make it a habit to regularly check your fence perimeter, gate latches, and any tie out devices you may have.
